Episode 5 – Carl Perkins

The Perkins Brothers

Carl Perkins initially let Jay Perkins of The Perkins Brothers do most of the singing.  Carl played lead guitar for the Perkins Brothers Band which, as Carl explains to us in our interview for Music Path, is difficult to do while singing lead himself.  He tells us about being married to a woman who knew a good song when she heard it.  Carl gives some insight into writing “feel good music”.

The Perkins Brothers

He describes in detail his first encounter with Sam Phillips, a devotion to his favorite country star that he and Elvis Presley both shared, and a song you’ve never heard live or on a record that Carl wrote for his mentor Bill Monroe.  It made Bill Monroe cry when he heard it and it made Carl Perkins cry when he told us about it.  It’s what makes Carl Perkins… Carl Perkins.
